Content Management Systems or CMS are web-based applications used to create, publish and manage dynamic web sites using an easy to use graphical web-based interface. Previously companies had to hire web design companies to create and maintain the contents of the company's websites by hard coding the contents in the web pages. However, now companies can have dynamic web presence by using a CMS that allows them to easily publish, manage and update their contents themselves.
CMS is like an online desktop whose features and functionalities can be extended by installing additional plug-ins. Today CMS are used to power many different types of web presence from very simple web sites to highly complex and sophisticated web applications. Government and corporate intranets, online social communities and online retail stores are good example of what a typical CMS can offer.

A CMS is like an online desktop. The site owners can login securely to manage the site contents and configurations through an user-friendly web-based graphical interface.

The site owner can easily create and edit their sites contents using a web-based word processors. Previously this job was very challenging as it required heavy knowledge of HTML and CSS styling. Therefore this task was mostly outsourced to webmasters and web designers. But now with a built-in word processor, regular web users are able to publish creative web pages without a need of a webmaster.
